The word petrichor was coined in 1964 by two Australian researchers describing the aroma of rain releasing oils produced by plants and soil bacteria, and the word suggests something divine. The Greek petra (stone) and ichor (the fluid that flows through the veins of the gods).
That is by far my favorite scent in the morning, especially when combined with the brewing of coffee.
When was the last time you paused to appreciate a smell? Or another of your four senses—those simple yet remarkable ways we experience the world? This week, let’s take a moment to focus on just one.
Your GratiTuesday challenge:
Pick one of your senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, or smell.
Spend 10 minutes reflecting on what makes you grateful for that sense. Maybe, like me, it’s the smell of morning rain, or the sound of your favorite song, the feel of a cozy sweater, or something entirely unique to you.
Sometimes it’s the smallest, most familiar things that bring us the greatest gratitude.
After your meditation, I’d love to hear what you discovered. Share the sense you chose and one thing you appreciate about that sense. Bonus points for creativity, of course!
